Year of the Blues Art Gallery

The Year of the Blues online gallery features the work of visual artists inspired by the sounds and history of the blues. Gallery selections are chosen by members of the Year of the Blues advisory board.

Dick Waterman's Between Night and Day: The Last Unpublished Blues Archive

Beginning in 1964 with the rediscovery of legendary blues singer Son House, Dick Waterman established Avalon Productions, the first agency devoted exclusively to managing and promoting blues musicians. While acting as their manager, he photographed blues legends like Son House, Skip James, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Otis Rush, Booker White, Arthur Crudup, John Hurt, Robert Pete Wiliiams, and many more.

This gallery celebrates the publication of Between Midnight and Day: The Last Unpublished Blues Archive, which includes, along with his images, Waterman’s vivid accounts of such musicians as John Lee Hooker, Sippie Wallace, Eric Clapton, Bobby Blue Bland, Janis Joplin, Willie Dixon, Furry Lewis, Bob Dylan, Luther Allison, and Fred McDowell. With a foreword by Chris Murray, a preface by Bonnie Raitt, and an introduction by Peter Guralnick, Between Midnight and Day: The Last Unpublished Blues Archive provides a compelling visual and oral history of the rich legacy of the blues.

Between Midnight and Day: The Last Unpublished Blues Archive, is published by Thunder's Mouth Press and available in bookstores nationwide. In addition, a limited edition signed book and print set is available through Insight Editions. To order this, or for more information, please contact:

Sharon McConnell's Livecast:Blues

"Livecast:Blues is an historic lifecast portrait project honoring great living blues musicians. I am a blind sculptor who loves the blues and making these portraits is way for me to combine these two passions.

My hope is that the portraits will be cast in bronze and become part of a multi-media educational museum exhibit that will inspire others to discover the music of the blues and the stories of the artists who created it. The lifecasts will also allow the blind and visually impaired to see these historic faces for the first time.

The life casting process is brief and pleasant (similar to a facial), and can be done anywhere. A gentle molding material is applied that quickly sets and captures an exact impression of the subject. No other type of portraiture captures the physical essence in such a lasting, tangible form." -- Sharon McConnell

George Hunt's High Cotton Tour

When the United States Senate declared 2003 as the Year of the Blues , renowned blues artist George Hunt began creating new paintings for a touring exhibit that tells a history of the blues from his perspective. This gallery features 20 of these works, as on display at the Experience Music Project from May 19 until July 7, 2003.

Grego

Texas musican and artist, Grego (b.1968) has been painting for the past 10 years. He works exclusively with discarded wood panels joined together using a variety of scrap lumber. Grego's subject matter mainly deals with Texas Bluesmen, either through portraits or the visual storytelling of a blues song lyric. Unique and colorful devils and skeletons act out both the literal and emotional meanings behind some of the genre's finest writings. Many of the handmade frames on Grego's works are enhanced with the addition of pennies and nickels, permanently glued to the different color squares.
